Frequently asked questions.

How will my NDIS plan be managed?

When developing your NDIS plan, you’ll decide how to manage your funding. You can choose the level of help you need, with four options available:

  • Self-managed: Manage your funding yourself or appoint a nominee, such as a family member or carer, to handle it on your behalf.

  • Registered plan management provider: A registered provider manages all or part of your funding, including finding support, paying providers, and handling paperwork.

  • NDIA managed: The NDIA manages your funding, helping you connect with registered service providers and paying them directly.

  • Combination: You can mix and match options for different supports within your plan.

What happens during a plan review?

An NDIS plan review is your opportunity to ensure that your funding matches your current needs and goals. During a plan review, you can:

  • Assess whether your current supports are meeting your needs.

  • Request changes based on new goals or circumstances.

  • Ensure your funding is appropriately allocated for the next plan period.

Be clear about what is working and what isn’t. Share your supporting documents and discuss your goals. Ask about plan management options (self, plan-managed, or NDIA-managed). After the review, you’ll receive a new plan or continue with your current one. If you’re unhappy with the outcome, you can request an internal review.

Can I choose disability service providers?

You have full control over which service providers you choose and how you receive support, regardless of how you manage your NDIS plan.

If the NDIA manages your funding, you must choose NDIS-registered providers. If you self-manage or use a registered plan management provider, you can access support from any provider, including those not registered with the NDIS. However, if using non-registered providers, consider the quality, risks, safeguards, and potential additional costs. For a combination of management options, registered providers must be used for the NDIA-managed portion of your plan.

What types of support does NDIS funding cover?

NDIS funding covers reasonable and necessary supports that help individuals with disabilities live an ordinary life. However, some supports may be funded by other government sectors or public services.

NDIS supports fall into three categories:

  • Core: Assistance with daily living activities.

  • Capital: Investments like assistive technology, equipment, and home/vehicle modifications.

  • Capacity Building: Supports that help build independence and skills.

Examples of NDIS-funded supports include personal care, home modifications, assistive technology, transport for social and community participation, job support, therapeutic services, and health-related supports linked to disability.

If unsure about what’s covered, consult a Local Area Coordinator for guidance before proceeding with an Access Request.
